Earth Hour 2013


Earth Hour is tonight at 8:30 p.m. It's an easy way to help bring awareness to the environmental issues impacting the world. And this year why not make a pledge to recycle more or to join the Recycling Coalition? Together we can make a difference in Ada and the world.

Join us Wednesday, March 27th, 2013 at 12 p.m. for our monthly meeting. We meet upstairs at the public library. Everyone is welcome!

Oklahoma Recycling Seminar

Date: October 13th, 2011
Time: 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.
Location: Conoco-Phillips OSU Alumni Center in Stillwater

Topics Include: Future Trends in Recycling; How to Develop a Master Recyclers Program; Rural Recycling Collections; E-waste Recycling; Tire Collections; Household Hazardous Waste Events; Backyard and Municipal-scale Composting Programs; Walmart’s Zero Waste Program; and much more!

A new feature this year with be the Lightning Round – a whirlwind of expert comments on hot topics followed by answers to your most burning recycling questions. There also will be an optional site visit of Stillwater Public Schools’ cafeteria vermicompost program at the end of the day and optional networking dinner at Hideaway Pizza in the evening.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day

Date: October 29th, 2011
Time: 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.
Location: ECU’s Norris Field on Stadium Drive in Ada

Ada area residents are encouraged to drop off the following unwanted chemicals free of charge: acids, antifreeze, asbestos, batteries, brake fluid, bleach, chlorine, fertilizer, gasoline, herbicides, insecticides, kerosene, lead, mercury, moth balls, naphthas, oven cleaners, paints, paint thinner and solvents, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, photography chemicals, swimming pool chemicals, rodent killer, window cleaner, spot removers, wood preservatives, engine batteries, rechargeable batteries including Ni-Cd batteries, fluorescent lights, TVs, monitors, bulbs, passenger tires, thermostats, used motor oil, e-waste (computers, VCRs, cameras, cords, typewriters, stereos, speakers, toner, ink cartridges, etc.).

Note: E-waste will also be accepted preceding the event at the Recycling Center at 326 East 12th Street in Ada.

E-Waste & White Good Collection Day


Date: April 20th
Time: 7:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.
Location: Behind the ReUse Center
2205 North Broadway
Ada, OK

Take your old computers, TVs, cameras, cell phones, small kitchen appliances, stoves, refridgerators, washers, dryers and more. They will also be accepting old medication and will have a shredding truck. This event is free to the public and businesses are welcome.

Phone Book Contest

The Ada Recycling Coalition (ARC) is sponsoring its 13th annual phone book collection contest for schools in Pontotoc county and is giving the winning classroom at each participating school a "pizza party." ARC is also giving the school that collects the most phone books $150.

Earth Day Recycled Art Contest

Date: April 21st (Thursday), in conjunction with the 8th Annual Earth Day/Water Festival Activities on the ECU campus.
Location: Portico of Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. The portico is the large covered area in front of the ticket window. It provides substantial protection from rain.
Classes: 2 Classes: Adult and K-12. University students will compete as adults.
Awards: 2 champions in each class and best of show (5 total awards). Special awards from various companies and organizations will also be given.


Rules:
  • Contest is open to all individuals
  • Each individual can submit up to three entries
  • Entries must be made of at least 80% recycled materials
  • No containers that contained flammable products will be allowed
  • Entries must be stable enough for transportation
  • Entries will be judged by Ada-Green and Sustainable committee, and ECU staff
  • A photo of the original recycled materials used prior to creating art is required. An official entry form (photocopies are acceptable) must be completed and securely attached to the photo of the original recycled materials used.
  • By submitting artwork, the artist grants permission to reproduce and display his or her name, photograph and artwork for the Earth Day Recycling Art Contest and for other waste reduction and promotion activities.
  • The use of copyrighted characters is prohibited.
  • Entries forms must be submitted to the Ada Chamber of Commerce Office, 209 West Main, by 2 pm Wednesday April 20th, 2011.
  • All entries must be on display by 9 am on April 21st and removed by 7 pm. Set up and removal is the contestant’s responsibility. A limited number of easels and presentation walls will be available on a first come first served basis.
  • This is a family-friendly event. Any entry that is deemed potentially offensive, by the contest judges or coordinators, will be rejected.

Mayor Cupps Proclaims November 15 "America Recycles Day in Ada"

The Ada Recycling Coalition encourages Ada residents to buy more recycled-content products (like recycled office paper), to increase their recycling efforts at home, school and work and to mulch (not bag) their lawn clippings and leaves for America Recycles Day.


In addition, ARC is sponsoring a poster contest for area elementary school students and a drawing for a mulching mower. For more information, or to enter the drawing, contact any ARC member or call Trudy at 436-8100.

2009 Household Hazardous Waste Day "A Big Success"


Tires
Approximately 205 tires were collected and kept from entering the landfill.

Batteries
12 lawnmower and 13 car batteries were collected and sold for $38

Used Motor Oil
205 gallons of used motor oil was collected

HHW
The following is a portion of what was collected
and disposed of properly:

Aerosols (241 lbs)
Flammable Liquids (618 lbs)
Oil-based paints (3,612 lbs)
Unusable latex paint ( 4,691 lbs)
Pecticides (1,264 lbs)
Corrosive Liquids (acids, etc.) (472 lbs)

E-Waste
106 Gaylord boxes and 34 large copier-type items
(or three semi-truck loads) went to Natural Evolution.
