The Ada Recycling Coalition is sponsoring its 14th annual telephone-book collection contest. The winning classroom at each participating school will receive money for a pizza party. The school that collects the most phone books will also win $150.

Ada Continues to Collect E-Waste

Due to the overwhelming positive response to the e-waste recycling event, Ada is continuing to collect e-waste for a little longer (the end date hasn't been set yet).

Ada area residents can drop off items at the Recycling Center at 326 East 12th Street in Ada during business hours. This event is free of charge. However, residents are encouraged to take any working items to the Chickasaw Reuse Center.

Curbside Recycling Coming Soon to Ada

Over the past several days Ada residents have been receiving there new recycling bins from WCA Waste Corporation, for Ada's new curbside recycling service. Starting December 1st people will be able to put all of their recycling in one bin and put it on the curb for pick up, it doesn't get much easier than that.

The city will still manage the recycling center and drop-off, this will be helpful if you have more recycling than will fit in your bin for that week and for those that live outside of the city limits.

Your bin will be picked up the same day as your trash but by a different truck. Be sure to place heaviest items on the top and if possible rinse items that need it. Don't worry if it's raining, wet material will still be processed.

Items that will be accepted include newspapers, jar lids, junk mail and copier paper, phonebooks, cardboard, paperboard, brown and white paper bags, paper egg cartons, drink cartons, plastic #1 and #2, magazines, softcover books, aluminum, steel, and spiral wound paperboard containers. You will find more information about what can and cannot be recycled in your bin.

Recycle Your E-Waste

You can help by recycling your e-waste. The City of Ada is collecting e-waste at the recycling center until the Hazardous Waste Collection Day. We have already saved two semi-truck loads and are working on the third.

Recycling PSA Contest

The Oklahoma Recycling Association is running a Public Service Announcement Contest to encourage recycling in Oklahoma schools and communities, with an emphasis on how recycling saves natural resources, energy and reduces pollution.

The theme for the PSA's is "Recycle for Your Future." Students in grades 9 to 12 can submit entries. The deadline is October 21st, 2011.

There will be huge cash prizes for the winner and their school's environmental science club, plus the winning PSA will air on TV stations throughout Oklahoma.

Recycle Bowl

Are you looking for a fun and creative way to increase school recycling participation or maybe begin a school recycling program in your community? Recycle-Bowl, a new nationwide comprehensive school recycling competition, could be your ticket to success.

Keep America Beautiful is announcing the launch of “Recycle-Bowl,” the first comprehensive nationwide recycling competition for elementary, middle and high-school students. Recycle-Bowl was created to provide students with a fun, interactive way to learn about waste reduction and environmental responsibility through in-school recycling.

Open to all schools and classrooms, the incentive-based recycling competition and benchmarking program kicks off this October and registration is now open on the Recycle-Bowl website at http://recycle-bowl.org. The competition runs from October 17 through November 12, culminating around America Recycles Day. Participating schools will track and report how much recyclable material they collect for a chance to win prizes. At the close of the four-week competition, the school in each state that collects the most recyclable material per capita will win $1,000. A national champion will then be chosen from among the statewide winners to receive an additional grand prize of $2,500.

Educational recycling activities will also be provided on-line and through a registration toolkit. The inaugural Recycle-Bowl is being sponsored by Nestlé Waters North America.

Ada area residents are encouraged to drop off the following unwanted chemicals free of charge: acids, antifreeze, asbestos, batteries, brake fluid, bleach, chlorine, fertilizer, gasoline, herbicides, insecticides, kerosene, lead, mercury, moth balls, naphthas, oven cleaners, paints, paint thinner and solvents, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, photography chemicals, swimming pool chemicals, rodent killer, window cleaner, spot removers, wood preservatives, engine batteries, rechargeable batteries including Ni-Cd batteries, fluorescent lights, TVs, monitors, bulbs, passenger tires, thermostats, used motor oil, e-waste (computers, VCRs, cameras, cords, typewriters, stereos, speakers, toner, ink cartridges, etc.).

Note: E-waste will also be accepted preceding the event at the Recycling Center at 326 East 12th Street in Ada.

The following members were present: Garmon Smith, Trudy Nevland, Stan Fullingim, Glenda DeShazo, Ambrie Walker, Lisa Sharp, Deanna Piercy and Marilyn Ellis.

Garmon Smith, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:15 pm.

Treasurer’s Report – Glenda DeShazo, Treasurer, distributed the Treasurer’s report, and it was accepted.

Minutes – Trudy Nevland distributed last month’s monthly minutes which were accepted for the record.

Ada’s Future Trash Collection and Recycling Plans – Garmon Smith reported that he and Doug Weirick met with Cody Holcomb, Shane Sweeney, Dick Scalf and a representative from WCA to discuss potential trash collection and whether or not recycling would be considered in the future. Smith said it was a very productive meeting and that he was under the impression that the city’s garbage collection service would soon be contracted out, and that curbside recycling was being strongly considered. In addition, it looks very likely that cardboard recycling will stay with the city and possibly even be expanded, as the current commercial program is working so well.

Oklahoma Green Expo – Members agreed that next year’s event might do better if it were held in April for Earth Day and when students are still in class. Members also agreed that they would like to see Leilani Munter (racecar driver / environmentalist) return, as well as the Secretary of the Environment.

County Fair – Trudy Nevland made a motion that ARC man a booth at the County Fair this year (Sept 1 thru 3) and to allow Lisa Sharp share it with her green endeavors. Deanna Piercy seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously. Sharp was made the committee chair and was given a check to reserve the space. A signup sheet for volunteers will be forthcoming.

Ada Air Show – Garmon Smith, who was responsible for trash this year, would like to see recycling bins setting next to each trashcan next year and that “go green” be advertised. Smith reported that five 95-gallon containers of bottles were collected.

Chickasaw Nation Recycling Update – Ambrie Walker reported the ReUse Center was going well and that air-conditioning units were installed. Walker also mentioned that the Chickasaw Nation may like to partner with the city on a composting program.

City of Ada Recycling Update – Stan Fullingim reported the recycling center remains very busy, and that cardboard is currently selling at $170 and mixed paper for $140.

Sponsor Certificates / Radio Spots – Joe Braly made a motion to present certificates to ARC’s Business Partners at the annual meeting in April and to pay for their lunches. Trudy Nevland seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

Joe Braly is scheduled to represent ARC and promote the Recycled Art Contest during three live radio interviews (KTLS, KADA and KYKC) on March 23 at 8:30 am.

Telephone Book Collection Contest – Trudy Nevland reported that due to spring break and several requests from teachers, the drop-off date has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 26 from 9 am to noon. Volunteers are needed.

Green Initiatives Committee / Green Expo – Theresa Hammonds reported that the Green Initiatives Committee will meet Friday, March 11 at noon to finalize plans for the recycled art contest. She also reported that more sponsors are needed and that the response from artists has been good. The Green Expo, scheduled for this summer, is moving along, and the Chickasaw Nation agreed to sponsor the event. Leilani Münter, an American race car driver and environmental activist, is scheduled to speak during the event. More vendors are needed, and everyone is encouraged to check out the website: www.oklahomagreenexpo.com for information regarding vendors, sponsorship, contacts, etc.

Annual Earth Day Meeting – Tuesday, April 19 from 11:30 am to 1 pm at the Elks Lodge. $10 buffet lunch. Steve Schmelling is scheduled to speak about the current water resources issues and Ada’s Green Expo. While Joe Braly is working on obtaining reusable shopping bags, Theresa Hammonds is checking on saplings to give out during the meeting. The slate-of-officers and board members to be presented for a vote is: Officers: Garmon Smith (Chair) Doug Weirick (Vice Chair) Glenda DeShazo (Treasurer) and Trudy Nevland (Secretary). Board Members: Dana Nickell, Ambrie Walker, Lisa Sharp, Steve Timmons, Joe Braly, Betty Parham and Marilyn Ellis.

Chickasaw Nation Recycling Update – Dana Nickell reported 696 people went through the Re-Use Center during the four days it was open in February and that 10,457 lbs came in and 7,257 lbs went out. Nickell also reported they filmed a commercial about the center this week. She also reminded members that on April 20 the Chickasaw Nation will be collecting: e-waste (including TVs and computer monitors free-of-charge) white-goods (unwanted appliances including refrigerators/freezers and A/C units) and pharmaceuticals. In addition to all that, they will shred paper and documents for people in need of this service. The public is encouraged to take advantage of all these events. Nickell also reported there is a form available to the public on-line to provide the Chickasaw Nation Department of Environmental Services with information regarding environmental or health concerns in our area. The information provided will be evaluated to develop an action plan to address the level of potential risks and/or concerns. The link to this site will be e-mailed to ARC members.

City of Ada Recycling Update – Stan Fullingim reported 1,858.28 tons of recyclables was collected in 2010–bringing in $261,550; just short 126 tons of being a record year. In 2008 the Recycling Center brought in $196,000 and $99,973 in 2009. Fullingim also figures that they are processing about 80 percent of the commercial cardboard in Ada.

Green Oklahoma – Lisa Sharp reported that people can go to her new website: www.greenokla.com for green events, businesses, news and resources.

EARTH HOUR – Lisa Sharp encouraged members to participate on March 26 by turning off all non-essential electrical devices for one hour at 8:30 pm wherever you are.

Earth Day Recycled Art Contest

Date: April 21st (Thursday), in conjunction with the 8th Annual Earth Day/Water Festival Activities on the ECU campus.
Location: Portico of Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. The portico is the large covered area in front of the ticket window. It provides substantial protection from rain.
Classes: 2 Classes: Adult and K-12. University students will compete as adults.
Awards: 2 champions in each class and best of show (5 total awards). Special awards from various companies and organizations will also be given.

Rules:

Contest is open to all individuals
Each individual can submit up to three entries
Entries must be made of at least 80% recycled materials
No containers that contained flammable products will be allowed
Entries must be stable enough for transportation
Entries will be judged by Ada-Green and Sustainable committee, and ECU staff
A photo of the original recycled materials used prior to creating art is required. An official entry form (photocopies are acceptable) must be completed and securely attached to the photo of the original recycled materials used.
By submitting artwork, the artist grants permission to reproduce and display his or her name, photograph and artwork for the Earth Day Recycling Art Contest and for other waste reduction and promotion activities.
The use of copyrighted characters is prohibited.
Entries forms must be submitted to the Ada Chamber of Commerce Office, 209 West Main, by 2 pm Wednesday April 20th, 2011.
All entries must be on display by 9 am on April 21st and removed by 7 pm. Set up and removal is the contestant’s responsibility. A limited number of easels and presentation walls will be available on a first come first served basis.
This is a family-friendly event. Any entry that is deemed potentially offensive, by the contest judges or coordinators, will be rejected.

New Chamber Member Launch Luncheon – Joe Braly, who attended the meet in September, reported ARC was one of two new Chamber members represented.

Green Initiatives – Dana Nickell reported an Art Recycling Project was underway for next Earth Day and that she and Theresa Hammonds would be soliciting for prizes.

Autumn Days – After thanking those who participated and reporting the event went well, Joe Braly made a motion that ARC spend up to $100 to purchase a tent for special events. Deanna Piercy seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously. Braly will give receipts to Glenda DeShazo, Treasurer.

America Recycles Day – Dana Nickell reported that ARC’s PSA contest is underway and the committee has had positive feedback.

Art Contest for Earth Day 2011 – Ambrie Walker made a motion that ARC conduct its own recyclable art contest in conjunction with Green Initiatives and award $100 to the winner in the following three categories: Elementary (1-6) Jr. High (7-9) and High School (10-12). Dana Nickell seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Committee members: Ambrie Walker, Dana Nickell and Trudy Nevland.

Resource Conservation Grant – Dana Nickell announced the Chickasaw was awarded the grant for expanding its reuse of construction (C&D) material.

Chickasaw Nation Recycling Update – Dana Nickell reported that a lot of items keep coming in to the Reuse Center. Ambrie Walker stated an average of 850 to 1500 lbs is accepted on the days they are open. In the plans for the center is a drop-off box for when the center is closed, a toy drive and a coat drive. In addition, Nickell reported that the Chickasaw Nation was a finalist for the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful and Environmental Excellence award.

City of Ada Recycling – Stan Fullingim, Recycling Coordinator, reported the center continues to set recycling records and that prices are currently high. He said the city is making money on the recyclables it is selling. Fullingim also observed that Ada, without intending to be, is becoming a recycling hub for the area. The center is receiving recyclables from McAlester, the Choctaw Nation, Sulphur and other communities. Fullingim would like to see Ada become a regional center for recycling one day. Dana Nickell suggested applying for a community block grant.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Oklahoma Recycling Seminar (October 15) – Several members are scheduled to attend.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event (October 23) – Trudy Nevland made a motion that ARC spend up to $100 to purchase much-needed drills and mixers in order to capture as much useable latex paint as possible during the city’s upcoming Household Hazardous Waste Collection event.

We want your used appliances and white goods- refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves, air conditioners, etc. Freon will be properly removed from all appliances.

For the first time in Ada, TVs will be accepted for recycling. Large or small- we will take them all!

All recycling services are free and open to the public.

We only accept these items during our recycling drive- so don't wait!

The Chickasaw Nation ReUse Center is also accepting new and gently used household items and building materials for redistribution to the public. Clean out your closets and give your old stuff a new life!

To celebrate Earth Day, the Ada Recycling Coalition (ARC) is sponsoring an essay contest for high school students (grades 9-12) in Pontotoc County.

The first-place essay writer will receive $100 and the two runners-up will each receive $50.

Contestants will be judged on their understanding of the general subject, their demonstrated knowledge of key issues, originality and style.

Mayor Cupps Proclaims November 15 "America Recycles Day in Ada"

The Ada Recycling Coalition encourages Ada residents to buy more recycled-content products (like recycled office paper), to increase their recycling efforts at home, school and work and to mulch (not bag) their lawn clippings and leaves for America Recycles Day.

2009 Household Hazardous Waste Day "A Big Success"

Ada Recycling Coalition Minutes

September 9, 2009

The following members were present: Garmon Smith, Trudy Nevland, Doug Weirick, Glenda DeShazo, Steve Timmons and Dana Nickell.

Garmon Smith, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:15 pm.

Treasurer’s Report – The balance reported was $1,810.43 (which included four new members).

Minutes – Trudy Nevland distributed last month’s.

BUSINESS
Household Hazardous Waste / E-Waste Collection Event – Trudy Nevland reminded members that the city’s annual HHW event would be held on Saturday, October 10 from 9 am to 2 pm at ECU’s Norris Field parking lot and asked members to help promote the event via flyers and e-mail. She also reported that e-waste would be collected the week prior to the event at the ICON center. Volunteers will be needed. Dana Nickell reported that there would be nine employees from the Chickasaw Nation in attendance and suggested the questionnaire be shortened. ARC will once again collect, mix and donate latex paint.

Howdy Fair – Dana Nickell reported that the event went really well and that three people became members, including John Hargrave, ECU’s president.

National Recycling Coalition – Garmon Smith reported that Keep America Beautiful (KAB) committed to partnering with the National Recycling Coalition (NRC) in supporting and promoting America Recycles Day this year. In spite of the recent outcome of the merger vote and NRC's subsequent announcement of its intent to declare bankruptcy, that agreement with KAB remains in place and we have been assured of their commitment to supporting the ARD State Coordinators and state affiliates with the necessary resources to promote the national day of recycling.

America Recycles Day – Members agreed to conduct a poster contest for area elementary students ($25 for the winner in each grade – contest rules same as last year’s) and to conduct a recycling pledge drive to give away another mulching mower in November to celebrate the America Recycles Day in Ada.

City of Ada Recycling Update – Cardboard is currently bringing $85/ton.

Sports Bottles - Dana Nickell made a motion that ARC purchase metal sports bottles in bulk for promotional purposes and membership recruitment. Glenda DeShazo seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously. Nickell and Nevland formed a committee to select the bottles.

Ada area residents are encouraged to drop off the following unwanted chemicals free of charge: acids, antifreeze, asbestos, batteries, brake fluid, bleach, chlorine, fertilizer, gasoline, herbicides, insecticides, kerosene, lead, mercury, moth balls, naphthas, oven cleaners, paints, paint thinners and solvents, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, photography chemicals, swimming pool chemicals, rodent killer, window cleaners, spot removers, wood preservatives, engine batteries, rechargeable batteries including Ni-Cd batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, passenger tires, thermostats, used motor oil, appliances and e-waste (computers, monitors, VCRs, cameras, cords, typewriters, stereos, speakers, toner, ink cartridges, etc...).

Note: E-waste will also be accepted the week preceding the event at the I.C.O.N. Center.

Household Hazardous Waste / E-Waste Collection Event – Trudy Nevland announced that, pending approval from the city council, the city’s annual HHW event would be held on Saturday, October 10. She asked Ambrie Walker to help get Chickasaw Nation approval to use the ICON Center the week before and after the event E-waste.

Howdy Fair – Ambrie Walker reported that she and Dana Nickell would be manning a recycling booth for ARC during the Howdy Fair at ECU.

Chickasaw Nation – Ambrie Walker reported that the Chickasaw Nation hopes to open a “re-use center” next year and asked for volunteers from ARC and possibly from ECU environmental students to help man it. Walker also asked members to review a draft “Energy and Natural Resource Conservation Management Plan” she was working on.

City of Ada Recycling – Stan Fullingim, Recycling Coordinator, reported 534 tons sold in this year’s second quarter. Discussion as to where to set a recycling trailer ensued. The Chickasaw Nation’s parking lot near Cradduck and Kerr Lab Road was suggested as an optimum location.

DISCUSSION – Garmon Smith would like to see cardboard collected from students moving into dorms next year during ECU’s move-in day.

The meeting was adjourned at 1 pm. Afterwards, members checked out Dr. Weirick’s new totally-electric car.

Chickasaw Nation – Ambrie Walker reported that recycling beverage containers at the park during the 4th of July festivities went very well.

City of Ada Recycling – Stan Fullingim, Recycling Coordinator, reported that recycling has picked up lately, but that it is currently difficult to sell plastic. The recycling department now maintains the trailers at Wal-Mart on the weekends.

Recycling Discussions

• Plastic Recycling – It is important recyclers remember to keep Number 1s and 2s separate and to remove the lids/caps before placing items in the bins to be recycled.
• Garmon Smith would like to see beverage containers recycled during next year’s Air Expo.

June 10, 2009

The following members were present: Garmon Smith, Trudy Nevland, Deanna Piercy, Lisa Sharp, Dana Nickell, Kyle Jones, Dawn Sowinski, Stan Fullingim and Marilyn Ellis.

BUSINESS

Annual Membership Drive
Drive is ongoing and dues are due. ARC’s newest corporate member is Citizens Bank.

OKRA – Glenda DeShazo made a motion that ARC become a member of OKRA for $75. Dana Nickell seconded the motion, and it passed.

Chickasaw Nation – Dana Nickell reported that the Chickasaw Nation conducted environmental camps in May, a grant was submitted for a re-use center, beverage containers were collected during the Relay for Life event, a composting project with red wiggler worms was completed and beverage containers will be collected at the park during the 4th of July activities.

City of Ada Recycling – Stan Fullingim, Recycling Coordinator, reported 13 loads (260 tons) were shipped in the first quarter and that cardboard was currently bringing $45/ton.

Community Pets – Dawn Sowinski talked about helping our community pets; she is looking into several different avenues such as Trap Neuter and Return (TNR) and an incinerator for PAWS.

Recycling Discussions

Members recommended more bins be set at the recycling center to prevent overflow on the weekends and that the bins need repainted.

Plastic Recycling – “Don’t forget to remove the lids/caps” and to keep Number 1s and 2s separated.

Recycling Contamination

The biggest headache in collecting recyclables is contamination. When it happens to our recycling collection the entire load often has to be taken to the landfill, because the material has lost its value.

Contamination occurs when recyclables are not prepared or disposed of properly. Please help control this serious problem by checking proper preparation procedures.

The golden rule of recycling... If in doubt, leave it out!

2009 Earth Day Meeting

The Ada Recycling Coalition meet at the Ada Elks Lodge on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 for their annual Earth Day meeting.

John Cartwright of the Linn Stock Paper Company, a major consumer of recycled materials, was the keynote speaker.

Pontotoc County Clerk Pam Walker read a proclamation designating April 22, 2009, as Earth Day in Pontotoc County

Ada Mayor, Barbara Young reads a proclamation naming April 22, 2009 as Earth Day in Ada, Oklahoma.

Ada Recycling Coalition board member Betty Parham presents awards to Earth Day essay contest winners at the Ada Elks Lodge Wednesday, April 22, 2009. Winners are Ada High's Ashley Lewis, first place in high school, Roff's J. J. Stewart, first place in junior high, Cali Stenson of Ada and Casey Kelley of Roff, both honorable mention in junior high.
